Director Rajkumar Santoshi Sentenced to Two Years in Jail for Cheque Bounce Case
Director Rajkumar Santoshi is facing legal troubles as he gears up to start work on his passion project, Lahore 1947. A court in Jamnagar recently sentenced him to jail for two years in a cheque bounce case, along with an order to deposit double the amount owed to the complainant.
The Cheque Bounce Case
According to reports, the complainant, Ashok Lal, had loaned Rajkumar Santoshi Rs. 1 crore in 2015 for a film. To repay the loan, Santoshi gave 10 cheques of Rs. 10 lakhs each, but they bounced in December 2016. Lal initially tried to contact Santoshi regarding this matter. When his efforts failed, Lal filed a suit under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
On April 15, 2023, the Jamnagar court asked Santoshi to pay Rs. 15,000 for every bounced cheque, totaling Rs. 1.50 lakhs. Despite initially refusing to accept court summons, he was later forced to make an appearance after a bailable warrant was issued against him. The court ultimately handed down a two-year jail sentence and ordered the filmmaker to repay double the amount, totaling Rs. 2 crores, to the complainant.
Impact on Future Projects
With his legal troubles looming, Santoshi’s film releases last year, Bad Boy and Gandhi Godse – Ek Yudh, failed to make an impact at the box office. Despite this setback, Santoshi remains focused on guiding his project Lahore 1947 to completion, starring Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, and featuring Aamir Khan in an extended cameo. It’s worth noting that Aamir Khan is also the producer of this period love story.
Hurdles and Future Prospects
With legal proceedings ongoing, it remains to be seen whether Rajkumar Santoshi will be able to obtain bail to avoid imprisonment. However, despite these challenges, Santoshi is determined to move forward with Lahore 1947. Additionally, he has revealed exciting details about Shabana Azmi’s character in the film, emphasizing her pivotal role in the story.
