Reflecting on Another Year at the Fantasia International Film Festival
The Fantasia International Film Festival has wrapped up, marking my seventh or eighth year covering it and my third in-person experience for this site. Returning to Montreal is always a surreal delight, where familiar faces and fellow critics, many of whom I’ve called friends, await. From collaborating with once co-workers like Joe Lipsett to reuniting with fellow Chicagoans like Dede Crimmins of Rue Morgue, the festival feels like a reunion of sorts.

“Tight Lettuce”: Harrison Houde’s poignant addiction dramedy presents a touching story about familial bonds and struggles with addiction. Drawing from real-life experiences, the film showcases a son’s unwavering support for his father amid hardship, embodying raw honesty that elicits both empathy and reflection.
