Objective: In the wake of the highly anticipated release of Border 2, excitement is palpable, especially regarding its groundbreaking war sequences. In an exclusive interview with MyAxom Reviews, producer Bhushan Kumar and director Anurag Singh discussed the unique challenges of filming large-scale action scenes without the use of green screens.
Behind the Scenes of Border 2’s Action Sequences
With filmgoers buzzing about the impressive action scenes in Border 2, director Anurag Singh shed light on the complexities of creating authentic war footage on real locations instead of controlled studio settings. The film was shot in various locations including Dehradun and Jhansi, often battling extreme weather conditions while coordinating a large cast and crew.
“The action sequences posed the biggest challenge, as the scale grew significantly,” explained Singh. “A crew that might typically consist of three or four people expanded to 400 or 500 on location. Shooting in actual locations rather than relying on green screens is notable, especially with the harsh cold or sweltering heat, making filming from dawn until dusk quite taxing.”
The Complexity of War Scenes
Creating realistic war scenes demands intricate coordination that transcends conventional action choreography. Every shot requires synchronized teamwork across various departments — from explosives experts to stunt coordinators, crowd management, and actor placement. This complex interplay allows for only a narrow window of error.
“Each action sequence is laden with multiple elements that must harmonize precisely; it has to flow like clockwork for a shot to succeed,” Singh elaborated. “Explosions must be precisely timed, with careful consideration of how actors and extras will react amid the chaos of gunfire and military activity. The challenge of executing such high-stakes action is immense.”
Addressing Aerial Combat Challenges
Another significant hurdle was incorporating elements that cannot be physically recreated, particularly aerial combat scenarios. While emphasizing realism, Singh noted that components such as fighter jets needed to be crafted using visual effects, necessitating meticulous integration to uphold the film’s authenticity.
“In many cases, certain assets are simply unavailable today. For example, the fighter planes had to be added through VFX, as we couldn’t afford actual working aircraft for the shoot. Thus, we had to ensure that the visual effects seamlessly blended into the scenes,” he explained.
Emotional Core Amidst the Action
Despite the film’s rigorous technical demands, Singh stressed the importance of maintaining emotional gravity in the action design. Sequences featuring intense trench combat by Varun Dhawan and epic tank battles with Sunny Deol were meticulously planned to resonate emotionally without overshadowing character-driven narratives.
“Strong performances are crucial in retaining audience connection during massive set pieces,” Singh emphasized. “When you have talented actors and well-crafted scenes, that emotional narrative translates beautifully on-screen,” he added, mentioning the sincerity of Ahan Shetty alongside the commendable acting prowess of Varun Dhawan, the emotional depth of Sunny Deol, and the heartfelt appeal of Diljit Dosanjh.
Border 2: A Legacy Continued
Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Border 2 aims to build on the legacy of the 1997 classic, intertwining expansive action with emotionally resonant storytelling. The creators focused not only on reenacting war on a grand scale but also on ensuring that every visual, from explosions to movements, contributed to the central human stories within the film.
