Irada Movie Review

Irada, “The Truth Lies Beneath The Surface.” This is an Indian Bollywood Eco-Thriller movie.

A massive explosion occurs at a high ranking business man’s factory. This explosion starts an investigation by local government officials. As the story continues more and more lives begin to intertwine.  These lives have been affected personally by the death of loved ones. A former army official looking for redemption for the death of his daughter. As well as a reporter who is looking to receive closure and the responsible parties to pay for her boyfriend’s death.

This film is I’m sure has a lot of reality based on it as there have been similar events like this. Eco-terrorism is not a thing of the past but even of today. Each and every one of our actions has to at one point be made accountable for. This film showcases that no matter how high up you are still called for your actions.

The business tycoon has no cares in the world of course, other than making his profit margin go up. He reveals that over the years he has been secretly poisoning the town through their water. Which, as he say’s “They are used to drinking this poison. Which, is good for my business.”

As people start to investigate more about the business man, his dealing, and the factory they discover the truth. As the truth is spread the witnesses go missing presumed to be killed by the business tycoon’s goons.

So what exactly is “eco-terrorism”? Wikipedia definition of “eco-terrorism” is as follows: eco-terrorism refers to acts of violence ostensibly committed in support of ecological or environmental causes against persons or their property.” “Eco-terrorism is closely related to civil disobedience and sabotage in the name of the environment causes.”

In a way, “Irada” reminds me of the American Film “The East” which deals with some of the same issues. Corruption in government and business practices and seeks to get the truth out to the masses at all costs.

This is the producing debut film of Prince Sony and Falguni Patel. The music is composed and arranged by Neeraj Shridhar.

The director has a very sharp wisdom and awareness of what is going on in her country and the world. Which, she brings to this movie. I am reminded of the many issues the world faces today. One of which, being clean, safe drinking water. I am reminded of the DAPL and the sacred land of the Indigenous First Nations Peoples. I am reminded of those here in the US that can’t drink the water from their faucets or they will get sick because of the lead and other chemicals in it. I am also reminded of those around the world who drink the water they bathe and wash clothes in.

This film is current to the times we are living in. It challenges each of us to look at the world and what we can do to make it a better place. Whether, by opposing those who oppress others. Or taking up a cause that is important to us. As well all of us, as making conscious everyday decisions to impact our environment and our fellow man in positive ways.
